Just recently Sun started offering the new Solaris 10 to end users FREE!  I was really excited to play with this new Unix based operating system right away.  I download all the stuff which took some time, registration with Sun, and lots of trudging through their site.  Finally when installation time came I had to push my excitement aside as the first two installations went awry.  Finally on successful installation I look, and say to myself it just linux (Which is also available free).  Upon further investigation I find that thing dissappear to places I didn't know exsisted, and nothing works quite right.  The O/S froze several times when I proformed simple tasks it didn't like (like moving a toolbar).

    The interface is so unfriendly that I could only stand it for about one day.  They seemed to have taken some of the interfaces developed in Linux and turned them to garbage.  I haven't seen an O/S this problematic since Windows 3.1, maybe not even that.  No driver support either.  I'm sure if you have Sparc hardware the system will run fine and all the hardware will work, but the interface still makes this O/S a nightmare and no fun to move around in.  Additionally the bundled software allows you to do just about nothing.

   If you don't have some specific role for a dedicated Sun Sparc Workstation don't even waste your time.  Any individual or company will get along better with some flavor of Linux.  This is quite possibly the most unstable, least user friendly O/S availble.  It makes MS-DOS Look like an intuitive work of pure genuis.
