I have had very good luck with my Abit AI7 P4 motherboard.  The Intel 865PE chipset seems to be very compatible with several of the distributions out there.  Tiger installs almost without a hitch, and leopard takes a bit of forcing.  Uphuck, and Kalyway seem to work well.  I have yet to try ATKOS.  If you have the right video card you can have a perfect fully functional install of Tiger.  Leopard seems to take a bit more pushing.  However both work pretty well.  I think this will be a good place to start a new forum on OSX86 / Hachintosh as the other available forums are totally drenched.  As they have so many posts it has become a total nightmare to sift through all that is there.  Also this forum as it is new will reflect the current knowledge base, dropping some of the older techniques, and drivers and using the most up to date drivers, and information.  Please feel free to post questions as I have read about two thirds of the entire OSX86 forums and should be able to streamline some of the information contained there in.
